Applications are invited from Indian nationals to work as a Ph.D. student in the Archaeology & Paleoanthropology Lab at IISER Mohali under the ISF-UGC-funded project The First Global Culture: Lower Paleolithic Acheulean Adaptations at the Two Ends of Asia.The project is a collaboration between Indian and Israeli colleagues to broadly compare various Acheulean datasets to understand Acheulean technology, behaviour and population dispersals. The methods include fieldwork (in India) and experimental archaeology (in India and Israel) in order to study stone-tool procurement, production and use in both regions, and conduct joint workshops - all to arrive at a comprehensive overview of the factors for the similarities and differences in the respective Acheulean records.

PhD research topic & related duties: The selected candidate is expected to develop their own specific thesis topic but which should be related to the overall project.  In addition, the candidate will be expected to participate in and assist with project-related fieldwork, lab work, conferences, workshops and so forth. The selected student will be supervised by Parth R. Chauhan.

Monthly stipend/fellowship: Rs. 25,000/- plus relevant research expenses.

Essential Qualifications: 

The applicant should hold a MA/MSc (in Anthropology/Archaeology/Geology/ or related disciplines) and have a strong training or suitable experience in archaeological field and lab methods, with a thrust in prehistoric archaeology and/or Quaternary geology or geoarchaeology. Basic computer skills and proficiency in English are also preferred along with willingness to work hard and show intellectual enthusiasm.
